For many individuals looking to make a positive impact on the lives of others, setting up a charitable organisation is the first step to making a real difference. With the associated tax breaks and public recognition there is a clear advantage in taking that next step and registering as a charity. The process of registering a charity can be time consuming and difficult. We have experience in registering charities with the Charity Commission and advising on the most appropriate charity structure.
Registering a Charity – what to think about.
When setting up a charity the first thing to decide upon are the charity’s objectives. The objectives should be clear and concise so that they can be understood by others and must be worded so that they are entirely charitable. The number one reason for the rejection of charity registration applications is that the objectives have not been worded correctly. We are able to word the objectives for you after consideration of the type of work you wish to undertake and any future plans you may have.
You also need to consider a charity name that is not too similar to other charities or companies. Any evidence of work already undertaken, such as a website or brochure material, together with donation and grant policy paperwork (if any), will assist in supporting an application to the Charity Commission.
The trustees undertake a vital role and are responsible in law for ensuring that charities are run correctly and in accordance with the charity’s objectives. Furthermore, the trustees are responsible for the managing the financial affairs of the charity, including how money is spent, preparing annual reports and ensuring the charity is governed in accordance with the law and the charity’s Constitution. You should consider the expertise and knowledge of individuals when considering appointing trustees as well as their experience and commitment to the role.
